Beware of Mr. Baker

At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-manned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria, Italy, South Africa, and (way) beyond.  Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his violent, dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by a multi-decade heroin addiction, went a long way to making him persona non grata even among the music greats who still revere his work. Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, Lars Ulrich, Baker’s 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them.

“An incredible new documentary.” – Andy Greene,

“A Rock Demigod. The wildly beating heart of Cream. Formidable and occasionally terrifying.” – Franz Lidz, The NY Times

“Captivating! A must-see film.”

Philip French, The Observer

“Either you accept him [Woody Allen] as this eccentric, creative genius, or you alienate him as too foreign, too quirky, too whiny and too neurotic. Either way, Woody Allen does not care. This is a guy who really lives to make a statement.”

Blank City

BLANK CITY tells the long-overdue tale of a disparate crew of renegade filmmakers who emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous moment in New York history. From the late 1970’s through the mid 80’s, when the city was still a wasteland of cheap rent and cheap drugs, these directors crafted daring works that would go on to profoundly influence the development of independent film as we know it today.

Directed by French newcomer Céline Danhier, BLANK CITY weaves together an oral history of the “No Wave Cinema” and “Cinema of Transgression” movements through compelling interviews with the luminaries who began it all. Featured players include acclaimed directors Jim Jarmusch and John Waters, actor-writer-director Steve Buscemi, Blondie’s Debbie Harry, hip-hop legend Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, photographer Richard Kern as well as Amos Poe, James Nares, Eric Mitchell, Susan Seidelman, Beth B, Scott B, Charlie Ahearn and Nick Zedd. Fittingly, the soundtrack includes: Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Contortions, The Bush Tetras, Sonic Youth and many more.

“Contains extraordinary footage of downtown Manhattan in the 70s…steeped in exhilarating alienation and mordant wit.”

Ben Walters,

“Recessions aren’t all bad. That’s part of the lesson derived from Blank City…So inspiring.”

Associated Press

“Blank City provides a vivid, vicarious tour…[Ms. Danhier] illuninates a hectic and fascinating place and time, bringing it back to life and tracing its continuing influence”
